Sea Glass is domestic (man-made and discarded) glass that is physically and chemically worn by sand and stone in salt water; being tumbled and ground produces frosted pieces of glass. This process of weathering can take between 7-10 years in a constant surf environment.
"Much of the sea glass that I use in my work I find on English beaches (North East and South West coasts). Family and friends habitually collect for me and I gleefully receive little packages of sea glass, pebbles and shells sent from beaches across the world, including several European countries, South Africa and Tanzania (Zanzibar).
Having discovered a way to recycle this beautiful glass litter fills me with joy.
Each small piece is perfectly formed and a delight to work with. I use each piece exactly as it is, sometimes gluing it but most often crafting it into my work by wrapping the edges in copper-foil strips that can then be lead-soldered to other similarly treated glass pieces.
As well as incorporating sea glass in decorative Suncatchers and Standing Panels I also create candle shades and other 3D pieces using internal lighting to enhance and show off the range of shapes, texture, colours and very occasionally letters and words on the glass that have survived their tumbling in the seas of the world.."
